Dental Crown

Your smile is more than just your appearance and has a massive effect on how you feel and live your life.

A single imperfect tooth, even if it is only slightly damaged, can have a severe effect on your confidence, stopping you smiling and talking easily and, in effect, limiting your personality and ability to interact with others. Damaged, cracked or broken teeth not only affect your self-image, but can also lead to further damage or problems such as tooth decay. When it comes to damaged, cracked or broken teeth, crowns can be the perfect way to achieve your perfect smile.

The crown procedure is a quick and simple process.

A crown is a method of restoring a tooth which involves the cementing of a ‘cap’ over the existing tooth. In that way, the whole of the visible portion of the tooth is covered and restored with something which is manufactured to be an exact replica of the tooth as it was before the damage took place. Although the vast majority of crowns are porcelain or ceramic in makeup, thus identically mimicking a natural tooth, it is possible to have crowns made out of metal such as gold, or from a combination of metal and porcelain. For an all natural, lifelike look, the best option is to go for an all porcelain or ceramic crown.

Overall, crowns are quick, simple and easy treatments that quickly cover and treat damaged and broken teeth, allowing you to achieve your perfect smile in no time at all.

Why You Might Need Crowns?

Damaged, unsightly or unhealthy teeth are not something which you should just be expected to put up with. Perfect Smile clinics offer the full range of treatments designed to restore your smile to the condition you should reasonably expect and Crowns are an excellent option in many cases. If the tooth has decayed to a degree where it will not support a filling or a large piece of the tooth has been chipped and fractured away from the rest then it may be impossible to build it up to its previous state using traditional techniques such as fillings. In such cases as this Crowns are the perfect treatment and they can also be used to restore a tooth which has been repaired due to a large cavity, or to strengthen a tooth which has been subject to root canal treatment.

No matter why your tooth needs repairing, be it decay, damage, wear and tear through grinding or general discolouration, a Crown will turn it back into the perfect tooth you need for a perfect smile.

How do Dental Crowns work?

1

Your initial appointment

At your initial appointment, your dentist will examine your teeth and discuss with you the range of treatments available. Then you can decide whether a crown will be the best option for repairing a damaged or unsightly tooth or not.

2

Preparing the tooth

At the next appointment, your dentist will prepare the tooth for crowning. This involves removing any decay and reshaping the tooth after having administered local anaesthetic. In order for the crown to sit comfortably, the tooth will usually be tapered.

3

Preparing the crown

Once the dentist has prepared your tooth for crowning they will use dental putty to make in impression of your mouth. This mould will then be sent to a dental laboratory, where technicians will manufacture a custom-made crown.

4

Fitting the crown

At this visit, your dentist will remove the temporary crown and cement the permanent crown into place.
