Orthodontist Putney: When Should You Consider an Assessment?

Crowding, prominent teeth, gaps, teeth erupting out of position or a bite that does not meet comfortably can all be reasons to seek an orthodontic assessment. Tooth position can also make some areas harder to keep clean.

A Putney orthodontist can identify the type of alignment or bite problem present and advise whether treatment may be beneficial. For children, assessment can also identify developing concerns while the teeth and jaws are still changing.

Specialist Orthodontist in Putney

Moaiyad Moussa Pacha (GDC 234638) is a Specialist Orthodontist providing NHS and private orthodontic care for children and adults at Perfect Smile Putney. He holds a DDS and MSc in Orthodontics and is a PhD clinical researcher in orthodontics.

His research includes different brace systems, treatment effectiveness, treatment duration, patient satisfaction and clinical risk. Patients comparing orthodontists in Putney can therefore receive treatment planning from a clinician whose work is specifically focused on orthodontics. For Putney orthodontics, planning considers tooth position, available space and the way the upper and lower teeth meet before an appliance is recommended.

Braces Putney: Metal or Ceramic Brackets?

Fixed braces use brackets and wires to apply controlled forces that gradually move the teeth. Traditional metal braces in Putney are clearly visible and can be used for a wide range of orthodontic corrections.

Ceramic braces in Putney work on the same fixed-brace principle but use tooth-coloured or translucent brackets, making them less noticeable from the front. The appropriate choice depends on the movements required as well as individual preference.

Teeth Straightening Putney: What Happens During Treatment?

Fixed braces require regular review appointments so progress can be monitored and the appliance adjusted as the teeth move.

Brackets and wires also create additional areas where plaque and food can collect. Careful brushing and interdental cleaning are therefore important throughout teeth straightening in Putney to help protect the teeth and gums during treatment.

Discreet fixed systems can also carry different costs from conventional metal braces because of the appliance and treatment involved.

These figures are indicative UK market ranges rather than confirmed Perfect Smile Putney fees. Your final cost will depend on the appliance recommended and the individual treatment plan following assessment.

Orthodontic Treatment Typical UK Private Price Range

BChD, MFDCRCS, Cert Impl

Dr Fareed Khan graduated from Leeds University and has always had a special interest in Temporo-mandibular Joint Dysfunction. He had a paper published on this subject whilst still a student.

After graduating, he spent a couple of years in a Dental Practice but then was resident in hospitals studying Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery for 3 years. Fareed then went to the USA for 2 years and studied Maxillofacial Radiology and Cranio-Facial Imaging.

Since then he has worked in our Putney practice and spent 5 years part-time at Eastman Dental Hospital studying Dental Implantology.
He has a special interest in the relationship of the Dental Occlusion to the position of the lower Jaw and the effects this may have on the TMJs and associated structures.

Fareed believes that the bite can affect the jaw position and place strain on the TMJs and jaw muscles, and therefore he has developed a protocol to realign the teeth and repair worn down teeth and replace missing teeth to help support the jaw in its natural position. Many patients have reported reduction in their TMJ and jaw muscle symptoms after this rehabilitation.

He is happy to accept private referrals for patients with these symptoms and offers consultations.
Dr Khan is now studying digital dentistry and believes the future of Dentistry is a holistic approach with the aim of healthy teeth and jaws. He also believes form and function go together so usually the most healthy position of the teeth is also the most aesthetic.

In his spare time he likes to train in his personal gym and spend time with his family.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Not necessarily. Clear aligners are most effective when the required tooth movements can be achieved predictably with a removable appliance. More complex bite problems, significant rotations or certain tooth movements may be better managed with fixed braces. Patients considering clear aligners in Putney should therefore have an orthodontic assessment before deciding which appliance is most appropriate.

They are different types of orthodontic appliance. Clear braces usually refer to fixed braces with ceramic or tooth-coloured brackets, whereas clear aligners are removable trays that fit over the teeth. Patients researching clear braces in Putney may encounter both options, so it is worth confirming whether they want a discreet fixed appliance or a removable system.

The right timing depends on how the teeth and jaws are developing. Some children benefit from assessment while adult teeth are still emerging, particularly where there is significant crowding, prominent teeth, bite concerns or delayed eruption. Orthodontics for children in Putney can therefore begin with an assessment rather than an assumption that braces need to start immediately.

NHS orthodontic treatment for under-18s is based on clinical need rather than cosmetic preference alone. Orthodontists use the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) to assess the severity of the problem and whether it meets NHS treatment criteria. This means not every child seeking children’s braces in Putney will automatically qualify for NHS treatment.

There is no upper age limit simply because someone is an adult. What matters more is the health of the teeth, gums and supporting bone, together with the type of movement required. Adults considering adult braces in Putney may have fixed braces, clear aligners or another orthodontic option depending on their clinical needs and treatment priorities.

Lingual braces are fixed to the inner surfaces of the teeth, so they are much less visible from the front. Their position can make them appealing to patients who want fixed treatment without conventional front-facing brackets. However, lingual braces in Putney may involve higher fees, a period of adaptation and different cleaning requirements, so they are not automatically the best choice for every patient.
