Real Smiles True Sedation Stories

"Fantastic Sedation clinic. The staff were amazing and really put my daughter at ease. They went above and beyond to make her comfortable and made a very anxious experience a lot easier."

– Charlaay

"I’ve always been extremely nervous about dental treatment, to the point where I avoided going for years. The dentist recommended IV sedation and explained how I’d still be awake but completely relaxed. On the day, I remember feeling calm within minutes, and after that, I hardly remember the procedure at all. It felt like everything was over very quickly. I didn’t feel any pain, and the whole experience was far less stressful than I’d imagined."

– Sarah M.

"I had quite a long treatment planned, so sedation was suggested. I was worried about being ‘put to sleep’, but it’s not like that — you’re just very relaxed and drowsy. I was aware at the start, but after that I don’t remember much at all. It made a huge difference, especially as I usually struggle with dental appointments. I’d definitely choose sedation again if needed."

– James R.

"I have quite a strong gag reflex and get very anxious in the dental chair. I felt calm, comfortable and didn’t notice the treatment happening. There was no pain at all — just a slight awareness at times, but nothing uncomfortable. It’s honestly made dental visits manageable for me again."

– Daniel S.

Sedation Options What to Expect

Many people feel nervous about dental treatment. While local anaesthetic is often enough to keep patients comfortable, some may benefit from additional support to help manage anxiety and feel more relaxed during their appointment. Your dentist will understand your anxieties and will be pleased to discuss the options.

  • Conscious Sedation: Safer and powerful modern alternative to general anaesthesia (GA) for most dental procedures. In this technique, specific drugs are administered by injection which enable you to become relaxed and sedated. Although you will remain in verbal contact with your dentist, you may well remember very little about your treatment. Conscious Sedation is inherently safer and more pleasant.
  • Inhalational Sedation: A type of sedation where you breathe a combination of gases which act to relax you. This technique is very safe and is especially suited to treating anxious children.

Treatment Comparison

Inhalation Sedation (Nitrous Oxide)

  • Commonly known as laughing gas, this gentle sedation helps you feel calm and relaxed during your appointment.
  • Delivered through a light nasal mask while you breathe normally
  • The effects wear off quickly, allowing you to return to your usual routine shortly after treatment.
  • Ideal for patients with mild anxiety or those undergoing shorter procedures.

Oral Sedation

  • A simple, needle-free option using a prescribed tablet to reduce anxiety.
  • Taken around one hour before your appointment.
  • Gradually enters your bloodstream, helping you feel calm and comfortable while remaining conscious.
  • Suitable for patients with moderate dental anxiety.

IV Sedation

  • Administered through a very small, soft needle placed in a vein, usually in your arm.
  • The process is virtually painless and carried out by trained, experienced clinicians.
  • Your breathing, heart rate, and oxygen levels are carefully monitored throughout treatment.
  • Ideal for patients with severe anxiety or those undergoing longer or more complex procedures.

Benefits of Dental Sedation

  • Eliminates dental fear: Allows you to receive the essential oral care you have been avoiding.
  • Amnesia effect (IV/Oral): You will likely remember very little or nothing about the actual dental procedure.
  • Reduces gag reflex: Completely relaxes the throat muscles, making treatments much easier to tolerate.
  • Time distortion: Lengthy, complex procedures will feel like they only took a few minutes to complete.
  • Strictly monitored safety: Your vitals are continuously tracked by modern systems and trained professionals.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Sedation

Friendly-dental-receptionist-assisting-patient

You can be referred by your dentist. Your dentist would need to complete a form instructing us of what treatment is required to be carried out and send into the practice along with any relevant x-rays and medical history you have.

Yes. Sedation treatment may be available for eligible NHS patients as well as private patients. Private treatment costs vary depending on the type of sedation and the complexity of the procedure. Our team can provide an estimated quotation before treatment and will be happy to answer any questions you may have. We also welcome referrals from other dental practices for sedation-assisted care.

Dental sedation is generally suitable for adults over the age of 18 who do not have a complicated medical history. Before recommending sedation, our clinicians will carry out a full assessment of your medical history, medications, and treatment requirements to ensure the safest option for you. Sedation treatment may be available for eligible NHS and private patients, and we also accept referrals from other dental practices for sedation-assisted care

Dental sedation can be used for a wide range of treatments, helping nervous patients feel more relaxed and comfortable throughout their appointment. This includes restorative procedures such as fillings, crowns, and root canal treatment, as well as tooth extractions, surgical removals, orthodontic tooth extractions, and dental implant placement. Your clinician will recommend the most suitable sedation option based on the complexity of your treatment and your level of anxiety.

The administration is virtually painless. Our gentle clinicians use a very small, soft needle to place the IV line, usually in your arm or the back of your hand. Once the line is in, you will quickly drift into a deep, comfortable state of calm.

Sedation is incredibly safe for the vast majority of patients. However, this is why our initial consultation is so important. We will take a comprehensive medical history, check your blood pressure, and review your current medications to ensure you are a perfect candidate.

If you have Inhalation Sedation (laughing gas), the effects wear off within minutes, and you can safely drive yourself home. If you receive Oral or IV sedation, you are legally required to have a responsible adult escort you home and stay with you for 24 hours.

With IV and Oral sedation, you will feel drowsy for the rest of the day. We strongly advise that you go straight home, rest, and avoid operating machinery, cooking, or making important decisions for a full 24 hours until the medication completely leaves your system.

Yes, we frequently welcome referrals from other dental professionals whose patients require sedation-assisted care. We work closely with referring dentists to ensure their anxious patients receive the exact treatments they need in a safe, comfortable, and highly monitored environment.

Accepting Referrals

We welcome referrals from dental professionals for patients requiring sedation-assisted care. Your dentist will need to complete a referral form outlining the recommended treatment and provide any relevant X-rays and medical history before your appointment.
