Upper Jaw Expansion With MARPE

A narrow upper jaw can contribute to crowding, bite imbalance, mouth breathing, and reduced nasal airflow. MARPE treatment widens the upper jaw through controlled skeletal expansion, supporting improved orthodontic alignment, airway function, and facial balance without major jaw surgery.

About MARPE Treatment

MARPE stands for Mini-Implant Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion, an advanced orthodontic treatment designed to widen the upper jaw in older teenagers and adults. Unlike traditional expanders, which rely on the teeth, MARPE applies controlled force to the bone directly from mini-implants within the palate. Studies have reported MARPE success rates averaging over 90% in suitable patients undergoing skeletal expansion treatment.

This modern skeletal expansion approach is commonly recommended for upper jaw narrowness, dental crowding, posterior crossbites, restricted tongue space, mouth breathing or airway-related functional issues. Research shows MARPE can achieve substantial skeletal width increases without excessive dental tipping associated with conventional expansion methods.

By widening the upper jaw and nasal floor, MARPE may help improve nasal airflow, comfort of breathing, tongue posture and airway function. At Perfect Smile, MARPE treatment is digitally planned using advanced imaging and bite analysis for precise expansion. Braces or clear aligners may be recommended after expansion to refine tooth alignment and maintain long-term stability.

Treatment Options & Pricing

Every MARPE case is unique and bespoke according to the patient’s age, sex, and requirements. Treatment costs vary depending on the level of skeletal expansion required, appliance design, number of TADs [Temporary Anchorage devices] needed, airway considerations, and whether additional orthodontic treatment is included within the overall plan. Almost all treated cases with MARPE are usually followed with a second phase of orthodontic treatment using fixed braces [train track] or clear aligners to align and coordinate teeth and bite.

Following your consultation, we provide a fully personalised quotation based on your clinical findings, jaw structure, bite development, and treatment objectives.

Treatment fees may vary depending on:

  • Complexity of upper jaw expansion
  • Degree of crowding or bite correction required
  • Airway-focused treatment planning requirements
  • Number of TADs
  • Combined braces or clear aligner treatment
  • Length of overall orthodontic care

All consultations include detailed digital assessment, imaging, and suitability evaluation before finalising treatment recommendations and associated costs.

Payment Options

We offer flexible finance solutions to help spread the cost of MARPE treatment in a manageable way. Interest-free payment plans may be available for shorter terms, while extended finance options can reduce monthly costs over longer periods. During your consultation, every option is explained clearly, allowing your treatment plan and payment structure to be tailored around your preferences.

Timeline What to Expect

MARPE is designed for older teenagers (16+) and adults with a narrow upper jaw, crowding, crossbites, airway concerns, mouth breathing or limited arch space. While timelines vary between patients, most treatments follow a phased progression over several weeks and months.

Day 1–3
Patients typically experience a short adjustment period after appliance placement. Mild pressure, temporary speech changes, palate sensitivity, and awareness of the appliance are common during the first few days.

Week 1–6
The active expansion phase usually takes place during this stage, with gradual appliance activation helping widen the upper jaw in a controlled and predictable manner. Some patients may also notice gradual improvements in nasal airflow and breathing comfort as expansion progresses.

Month 2–6
Once expansion goals are achieved, the appliance generally remains in place to support bone formation and stabilisation and allow the newly widened upper jaw to settle properly.

Month 6+
Some patients continue treatment with braces or clear aligners to improve tooth positioning, bite alignment, smile balance, and long-term orthodontic stability following expansion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mask Group 5

Yes. MARPE is specifically designed for adults and older teenagers whose upper jaw bones have become more resistant to conventional expansion. In suitable patients, MARPE may provide a non-surgical alternative to surgically assisted upper jaw expansion procedures. Eligibility depends on skeletal maturity, palate anatomy, and overall orthodontic requirements.

MARPE may help support improved nasal breathing by widening the upper jaw and increasing space within the nasal airway. Patients with narrow upper arches, mouth breathing habits, or airway-related concerns may notice improvements in airflow and breathing comfort following treatment. Individual results vary depending on anatomy and diagnosis.

Restricted upper jaw development may sometimes cause decreased airway space and mouth breathing during sleep. In appropriately selected patients, airway-focused orthodontic treatment based on MARPE may improve upper jaw width and nose airflow. Orthodontic treatment does not treat medical sleep disorders directly, but expansion may facilitate improved airway function in the context of a more comprehensive assessment.

Most patients report MARPE as causing pressure rather than significant pain. Tightness, temporary palate sensitivity or pressure around the nose and cheeks are common during the expansion phase, especially in the first few days post-activation. These symptoms are usually manageable and temporary.

The active expansion phase typically occurs over weeks, although total treatment time is dependent upon the amount of expansion needed, and braces or clear (removable) aligners are normally added following that. Many patients continue treatment with orthodontic alignment after expansion for long-term bite stability.

Often, yes. MARPE is used first in orthodontic treatment to create extra space and to improve upper jaw development, before braces/clear aligners are used for final tooth positioning and bite alignment.

For older teens and adults with constricted upper jaws, dental crowding, posterior crossbites, mouth breathing, restrictive tongue room or airway issues, MARPE treatment may be an option. Suitability is established by a detailed medical examination, electronic scans and orthodontic imaging performed by our specialist orthodontist.

Yes. Perfect Smile offers flexible dental finance options for private orthodontic treatments, including interest-free 0% APR finance for eligible patients with shorter repayment terms, as well as extended monthly payment plans with subsidised rates for longer treatment periods. Finance applications are completed digitally, and treatment can usually begin once approval has been confirmed.
